This Week in Reading, Phonics, and Writing:

Letter(s) of the Week: Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z
Sight Words and Reading At Home: A list of sight words came home. I ask that you partner with me in having your child practice the sight words every night until they have mastered the words. As an extension of learning the sight words I ask that you also read each night with your child and have them pick out the sight words as you read. Eventually they will learn how to decode and read the words and they can switch to reading to you! Thank you for your support!
Reading:
We are learning that words are always around us and we can learn those words to help recognize them in a book. We will label the room with words to learn environmental words and understand to start recognizing that everything has a matching word. Students are learning reading strategies of how to look through a book even if we don't know the words yet. Students are learning how to find patterns is books that can help them get familiar with words so they can have an easier time figuring out what a book is about.
Readers Workshop:
Students are starting to compile all their leveled and interest books into their bag of books for independent reading stamina time. Students will continue to practice finding their quiet reading spot and practice the routine of reading stamina. Students are learning how to "read" a book even if they don't know how to read the actual words yet. We are teaching reading habits for the students to get very familiar with as they begin the process of reading. Students are learning how they can improve their reading by reading with a partner and gathering ideas from others.
Writers Workshop:
Writers workshop will begin in December after we have had time to learn about all our letters.
Phonics:
We have begun our phonics program are are using our letter magnet boards, white boards and makers to practice the letters and sounds we are learning, we are continuing to practice using the right sitting position and pencil grip for writing. We are continuing learning our letters and focusing on Aa and Gg this week. Students take picture walks, match pictures to words, tell themselves a story, and count/track how many words are on a page. Please read and practice some of these skills at home as well! See above for sight words and reading at home.
